Preselection

Norwegian broadcaster NRK will select it's Eurovision Song Contest 2018 entry at "Melodi Grand Prix" final at the Oslo Spektrum on 10 March.

NRK launched call for the Eurovision 2018 entries on 31 January 2017. "This is part of a long term plan for Norway again to win the Eurovision Song Contest, says project leader Stig Karlsen. Karlsen encouraged everyone to submit songs for the next edition of Norway's biggest music show. Both finished tracks or demo versions have been accepted. Submission period remained open until 10 September 2017. Anyone can apply, but artists should have been over 16 years old to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest. Both Norwegian and foreign songwriters could participate, although the editors especially encourage Norwegian composers to submit entries. The songs should not have been published or performed publicly before.

Karlsen believes that the main point of the plan is to get the most skilful songwriters, producers and artists. "Some of the world's best composers are coming from Norway, and it is them we're aiming at when we open submission period for the next year's Melodi Grand Prix. Eurovision is the closest we get to the Olympics in pop music, and now they are aiming for the gold medal. We encourage best of the best in Norway to work on a track that can bring us victory in the world's largest music competition", says the project manager.

Stig Karlsen replaced Jan Fredrik Karlsen as MGP boss, taking over responsibility for the musical content, while continuing his position as project manager for the Melodi Grand Prix. Jan Fredrik has chosen to quit, as the work at MGP does not make it possible to combine with other job activities. "Stig has a solid background as producer and repertoire manager for many of NRK's music concepts. He has backgrounds from, among others, P3, VG-list Top 20, Beat for Beat, Lydverket and he has been responsible for a number of major concert production", says Editorial Head of NRK Entertainment Hanne Roaldsen, who sees it as a strength that it is the same person who manages organization of the Melodi Grand Prix, also will be looking for the songs and artists. "The music is after all the main ingredient of the Melodi Grand Prix".

New record of 1200 received entries has been reported by the broadcaster, which is 200 more than in 2016 or 2017. "There are so many talented people who have entered in next year's MGP. It's going to hurt to pick out only ten songs and artists who will fight to represent Norway during the Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon". A special jury will deliberate the 2018 MGP competing entries in November taking into account opinions of various focus groups (fans, people of different ages) which were invited to listen to the potential entries. "We have done this to see if there are any of the submitted songs that stand out in all the groups and thus have greater impact than the others. But those who have listened have not gotten to know artists or songwriters, but only the songs. Just to have the focus where it should be: Finding the best songs,", explains Stig Karlsen. Competing entries will be presented in full during special press conference which will take place on 15 January in NRK's Store Studio. You can listen to the participating songs here.

Silya returns as a host in the Melodi Grand Prix. Together with Kåre Magnus Bergh, Silya Nymoen will host the live final in Oslo Spektrum on 10 March, 2018. "It's a great job to join the program again! The Melodi Grand Prix is fun madness and music circus. And I'm looking forward to working with Kåre Magnus again", says Silya. The two hosted the Melodi Grand Prix together in 2015 and 2016.

"I'm happy to have Silya back on the team. She is the born entertainer, a rock-solid host, with lots of charm, attitude and musicality. In the two-team with Kåre Magnus Bergh, they always get a great mood", says project manager and music director at MGP Stig Karlsen

Silya and Kåre Magnus will also lead the press conference in Store Studio on Monday 15 January next year. Only then it will become known which 10 artists will compete in MGP 2018.

"We are looking forward presenting a solid collection of songs, artists and composers. Everyone knows that MGP will be a festive night with confetti and pyro effects, but nobody will doubt that it's the music that is the essence of MGP", says Stig Karlsen. This year all the songs will be released in full the day the artists are made known. About the speculation around the artists of the year Karlsen continues: "I can reveal that this year's MGP songs are screaming for a dance floor. We will therefore have to remove a few hundred chairs from the floor in Spektrum, to make room for the eagerest dance feet".

Tickets for Norwegian Melodi Grand Prix 2018 went on sale on 15 December. They are priced 430 and 225 NOK (44-22 Euro). There is no age limit, but kids below 13 should be accompanied by an adult. Booking is possible here.

Norway: Submission period for Melodi Grand Prix 2019 is now open.

Today NRK has invited songwriters to apply for the participation in the 2019 edition of Norwegian national selection show Melodi Grand Prix. Submission deadline was set for September 9. Both Norwegian and foreign songwriters can participate, although the editors especially encourage Norwegian composers to submit contributions.

In addition to choosing songs from submissions, NRK will also directly contact composers and artists, and ask if they want to participate in the competition. NRK reserves the right to select the artists who will perform the songs, but this is done in dialogue with the songwriters.

All artists participating in MGP must be at least 16 years when participation in Eurovison Song Contest in May 2019. At this stage there is no special requirements for the quality of the submitted demos. The most important thing now is that the jury get an impression of the melody, lyrics and arrangements. There is no time limit on the songs submitted, but should your song be chosen, the track must be shortened so that it is no longer than 3 minutes. The contribution must be unpublished and not previously performed in public.

If your song is being picked to participate, a finished master of the track, adhering to the rules, is to be made available to NRK within a time limit given by NRK. There will not be given any economic support to the production of the songs. All rights to the master of the song will be retained by the owner of the master. NRK will not gain any rights to the song besides the right to broadcast the song in the competition and enter the song into the ESC should it win in Norway.

Professional jury will make its choice during November 2018, and all who have submitted entries will be notified as soon as the decision is made.

Submission form is available here.

Melodi Grand Prix".

Melodi Grand Prix 2019.
