Bio

Bishop's Stortford singer-songwriter SuRie (Susanna Marie Cork) will represent UK at the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 with "Storm".

With classical roots in piano, voice and oboe, SuRie's musical career started early as a child soloist, performing for the likes of HRH Prince Charles in iconic British venues such as The Royal Albert Hall and St. Paul's Cathedral and at venues all around the world, including St. Mark's Basilica in Venice. A graduate of The Royal Academy of Music, SuRie was recently elected an Associate of the Academy, an honour awarded to former students for their significant contribution to the music profession.

With her head buried in books as a child, a creative young SuRie was often found writing short stories, poetry and lyrics which swiftly turned into song writing. Her musical style of piano lead storytelling pop is influenced by piano singer-songwriters such as Tori Amos, Regina Spektor, Billy Joel and Alicia Keys. More recently she's also inspired heavily by the poetic, cinematic story telling work of Emiliana Torrini, Ry X, Agnes Obel and Imogen Heap. SuRie has held residencies in Jazz lounges throughout London and performed backing vocals for artists like Chris Martin and Will Young.

SuRie's debut "Something Beginning With" was released in December 2016. It is the culmination of a writing and recording process that took SuRie from London to Greece, via Australia, New York and Austria to Borneo; from her home recording studio in the UK to the state of the art Malmö Live recording studio in Sweden. Along the way, SuRie became more than just another singer/songwriter project. Connecting with visual artists, musicians, and writers, Something Beginning With ... is just that. The beginning of a project that irreverently crosses lines and borders between a wide range of artistic disciplines. Interestingly, the album also includes song Storm, albeit different from the Eurovision one.

She has prior Eurovision experience as she was a backing vocalist and dancer for Loïc Nottet at Eurovision 2015 in Vienna, Austria, representing Belgium with Rhythm Inside. She returned two years later as Musical Director for Blanche's City Lights in Kyiv, Ukraine last year. Both entries came fourth in their respective finals. It was after almost a year working with the UK Eurovision team to write material for other performers that SuRie was finally approached about singing herself.

She explained: "A couple of months ago, I was approached to see if I'd consider being a vocalist on one of the tracks. At the last minute, Storm popped up. I heard it and I really liked it — something in it grabbed me — so I said to the team let me have a play around with it, and that's how I got the gig. The track is a mix of piano, ballad and a singer songwriter mood, which is normally my style, but it really develops and becomes this dynamic, soulful pop party. That mix is really quite special. You've got something for everyone, but you've also got that emotional link at the beginning"

Tell us some things that people might not know about you.

I love ballet. When I was younger I used to wish on every eyelash and every time cutting a cake that I would get into the Royal Ballet School. Before rocking my 'Peter Pan' look, I used to have hair long enough to sit on. My nickname is Squidge.

Have you got a lucky routine before going on stage?

Being on stage is genuinely where I feel most at home in the world so I don't really have any pre-stage superstitions or routines. I normally like to be left alone for a few moments so I can calmly collect my thoughts and ensure I'm on the right spot at the right time, singing the right lyrics and that I haven't forgotten to put clothes on…

Why is the Eurovision Song Contest important?

What I love most about the Eurovision Song Contest is the incredible, beautiful Eurovision community and everything they stand for. Celebrating diversity, equality, positivity, love and all types of music - appreciating it and respecting it whatever our differing musical tastes are. It's an incomparably joyous energy!

In the build-up to Eurovision 2018, UK entrant SuRie has released an acoustic version of her song "Storm". Having already catered to the millions of Eurovision fans around Europe with the release of both the original version and the dance re-mix of the track on all digital platforms, "Storm" has now also received the singer/songwriter treatment by SuRie.

For this intimate version, SuRie accompanies herself on the piano, supported by a small string section. Fans will certainly appreciate her introverted interpretation of the song, freeing her distinctive soulful voice from the tight up-tempo beats of the previous releases, and letting it soar in all its glory.

SuRie says: "The Eurovision Song Contest experience has gone far beyond any kind of expectation I might have had when Storm was first pitched to me. To perform the song, to hear it sung back at me by the thousands of fans in the UK, Israel, The Netherlands and Spain, to see how it puts smiles on faces and to feel how people connect to it; it has made me realise there's more to this track than meets the eye. Stripping it back to its most intimate, most poignant message has turned the whole adventure full circle for me. I hope fans will embrace this version, and there is no denying that it takes things back to where I come from, musically. A good song still stands when stripped back to its bare bone writing, and it has been so exciting and fun to hear Storm thrive in this new version.".

The release of this version of "Storm" ties in with the acoustic tour SuRie will embark on when she comes back from Eurovision in Lisbon. The concerts will see SuRie perform acoustic versions of Eurovision hits and winners from the past, under the title "Eurovision Unplugged". Venues and dates can be found on SuRie.me

The acoustic version of "Storm" is available on all digital platforms from today, April 23rd.

Rylan Clark-Neal joining Scott Mills for the semi-finals broadcast on BBC Four. Graham Norton will return for the Grand Final on BBC One joined by Mel Giedroyc who continues to be a part of the Eurovision family taking the reins as BBC Eurovision Spokesperson delivering the result of the UK vote live from London; while Ken Bruce will continue his long-running coverage over on BBC Radio 2.

Graham Norton says: "Eurovision is without doubt one of my favourite nights of the year - hugely entertaining, wildly unpredictable and often very funny. The UK have a belter this year with SuRie and Storm. It's an anthemic floor filler that deserves to do really well, but that's the beauty of Eurovision - anything can happen!"

Rylan Clark-Neal, Semi-Final Co-Commentator says: "After an amazing evening at Eurovision: You decide I'm absolutely thrilled to be saying I can't wait to join the Eurovision family and host the semi-finals alongside Scott for the UK this year. As a massive fan of Eurovision I've already cracked out my Union Jack spice girl jacket and am packed and primed and ready to take on Lisbon. SuRie was great this year and I can't wait to watch her represent us."

Scott Mills, Semi-Final Co-Commentator says: "Eurovision is always the highlight of my year and I am truly excited that I'll be presenting with fellow Eurovision fan, Rylan. Eurovision is the most wonderful spectacle and I'm looking forward to all the weird and wonderful performances that the contest always brings. Rylan and I will be live from Lisbon revealing who the finalists will be as well as cheering on the UK entry SuRie."

Mel Giedroyc, UK Spokesperson says: "I am over the moon to be the UK spokesperson for this year's Eurovision Grand Final on BBC One! I'm gutted to be missing the semi-finals this year but I'm super excited to be announcing the UK's televote result live from London on the big night!"

Ken Bruce, Radio 2 Commentator says: "I'm delighted to be fronting my 31st Eurovision for BBC Radio 2, and look forward to presenting my radio coverage from a sun-drenched Portuguese cabana, but more likely two square feet of airless garden shed. That's showbiz though!"

After receiving the Spanish couple, the Island of São Miguel, in the archipelago of the Azores, was the stage for the recording of the postcard of the United Kingdom for the Eurovision 2018.

Before São Miguel, SuRie made a stop in Lisbon, where she was delighted with the pastéis de nata and visited the shop O Mundo Fantástico Da Sardinha Portuguesa (The Fantastic World Of Portuguese Sardines).

The iconic door, an element common to all postcards , was located at the Gorreana tea plantation, the only tea plantation in Europe, and SuRie participated in collecting the tea along with some people dressed in the typical clothes.

Since 1883 the company Gorreana produces black and green tea there. Green and black tea was introduced in the island in 1750, brought by ships returning from the Eastern world. Planted far from industrial pollution, plantations have no use of any herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, dyes or preservatives and harvested between April and September, Gorreana tea is effectively a 100% organic product. Currently, Gorreana plantations cover an area of 32 hectares where about 33 tons of tea are produced per year in the varieties of black and green.

"I had a great time recording this postcard. Being British, it was perfect for me to see first hand the process of making tea, because we really love tea! The plantation is magical and the view of the rows of tea plants is simply sweeping! Everyone was very hospitable and I drank the best cup of tea of recent times! Simply delicious!"

The United Kingdom's 2018 Eurovision Song Contest representative SuRie met former X Factor runner up Saara Aalto, who will be competing with her on the Eurovision scoreboard in seven weeks time. Saara will of course be representing Finland.

They met up for coffee to discuss the upcoming competition and talk all things Eurovision. It looks like they hit it off. Saara took to twitter to say that SuRie makes her laugh out loud, she's a free spirit and the perfect Eurovision friend to have.

The duo's meet up was filmed by the BBC as part of their Eurovision promotion campaign and will help promote the United Kingdom's entry in Finland.

Saara's sighting comes after she told Pink News: 'I am very proud to be lesbian and I feel very much like I am lesbian, totally.' The singer proposed to her girlfriend Meri Sopanen after Finnish lawmakers ruled against a petition calling for the marriage equality law to be repealed.

She also opened up about the effects on cruel troll in the candid interview: 'If people say nasty things then they are sad with their lives. If you are a balanced, positive person you don't say bad things to each other. 'All those people who say bad things are miserable, and I don't want them to affect my decisions or my life.'.

Meanwhile, former Eurovision Song Contest winner Cheryl Baker is tipping SuRie to deliver the country's best result of the recent years. Talking at the launch of the Dancing On Ice Tour, Cheryl, who won Eurovision with Bucks Fizz in 1981 said that SuRie "I think she's brilliant. It's a great song and I think we've got a very good chance of being in the top five.".

ESCKAZ's Michael Duncan speaks live on BBC South East ahead of tonight's Eurovision: You Decide final.

It was with great pleasure that ESCKAZ.com was invited to a press event Eurovision: You Decide - Meet The Artists hosted by the BBC at the prestigious New Broadcasting House this evening. In a first from the BBC, for which we are really thankful, there was an opportunity to meet with and interview all the acts taking part in the show in Brighton next week.

The room was pretty packed with various Eurovision Fan media and journalists from the mainstream UK media outlets. Nibbles, wine and soft drinks were freely available - so many thanks to the UK production team, especially Head of Delegation Helen Riddell and her team.

As Helen was hosting the evening she started proceedings off by given a short speech about how the UK entry will be decided this year and then allowed the acts to come out for a short photo session. The gathered media were then given as much time as they needed to conduct short interviews with the acts - no singing though…they have their voices to consider and rehearsals to think about.

All the videos can be in the playlist below. There were some real highlights for us though, especially Liam Tamne with his openly gay mixed race angle, Jaz Ellington with his name dropping of Will.I.Am and the infectious Goldstone girls. Asanda seemed quite shy and we feel that given her young age this is totally allowed. RAYA seemed like a good time girl from Doncaster and SuRie was great to chat to about taking part in Eurovision before.

A greta evening getting to meet all the acts and again many thanks to all at the BBC for the invite. Good luck to all the acts in the show next week in Brighton

29/09: Public submissions for the UK Eurovision song are open

Preselection

British entry for 2018 Eurovision Song Contest was selected during the televised national preselection final Eurovision: You Decide. British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) opened public submissions on 29 September, which run until 27 October. As last year, all public entries will be carefully considered and shortlisted by a representative panel of OGAE UK members. At the same time, entries are also being sought from leading professional songwriters, with guidance from Record Industry Executive and Music Consultant for the BBC, Hugh Goldsmith.

Submitted entries must adhere to the EBU competition rules with a few additions: Each singer/s must be 18 years old on or before 1st January 2018. Composers and song writers may only submit one entry. The BBC reserved the right to use a performer of its choice for any song submitted for consideration. To register interest in representing the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest 2018, one should have mailed the title of the song, the name of the artist(s) and the name of the composer(s) to BBCEurovisionSubmissions@bbc.co.uk. Within 72 hours of sending the email instructions on how to upload your video to the BBC Eurovision portal would have been provided.

Hugh Goldsmith says: "The ESC in Lisbon 2018 promises to be yet another fantastic show and I'm determined that we, the UK, are able to build on our excellent showing of 2017 thanks to Lucie Jones' superlative performance of the powerful ballad, Never Give Up On You. To this end I am, again, looking for songs with emotive lyrics, memorable melodies and brilliant productions. However, success at Eurovision can also be about originality and the element of surprise. So, please also send us your songs if they are creatively fresh, brave and a little bit different!"

Guy Freeman, Editor, BBC Special Events and Formats said: "For anyone out there who thinks they have a brilliant song that can resonate with millions of people around the world and the 2018 jurors this is your chance and we'd love to hear from you."

The UK national selection for the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest, 'Eurovision: You Decide' will be held on Wednesday 7th February at the world-famous Brighton Dome. The show will be hosted once again by Mel Giedroyc who will be joined by Swedish Eurovision winner Måns Zelmerlöw. Eurovision: You Decide 2018 will be broadcast on BBC Two. Brighton Dome is the site of ABBA's 1974 Eurovision Song Contest win with Waterloo. Tickets for the show are now on sale at Brighton Dome website.

"I'm really, really looking forward to hosting Eurovision: You Decide together with Mel this year," said Mäns. "I'm sure we'll have a great show and I would love to see the UK achieve a great result in Eurovision 2018. I can't wait to be part of the You Decide journey and make both You Decide as well as the Eurovision Finals, a part of every UK home. I have participated in some artistic auditions and heard the songs. It will be a good year for "You decide" and I definitely think I've seen an ESC winner here"

Mel Giedroyc said: "My favourite time of year has come round again! I can't wait to hear the songs and meet the artists. And what a thrill to host proceedings with THE hero of my time - the Måns Zelmerlöw all live from the Brighton Dome. It will be a night to remember!".

Guy Freeman, Editor, Special Events and Formats, BBC Studios said: "We are so happy to be able to bring the show to such an iconic Eurovision venue. It will be the perfect home for what is shaping up to be a very exciting contest.".

The 90-minute show will feature performances of six brand new songs. The artists will compete for the honour of representing the United Kingdom at the Final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 in Lisbon, Portugal. The performers will take to the stage in a bid to impress both the viewers at home and a professional jury at Brighton Dome. After each performance, a panel of experts will be on hand to provide their critique about the songs and the artists, and give their view on how the songs could translate to the Eurovision stage in Portugal for the Grand Final next May. The winner will be revealed on the night after the results from the live public vote have been combined with the results from the professional jury. The six competing songs and artists were revealed to the public on 24 January 2018.

On 6 February line-up of experts panel for British preselection Eurovision: You Decide has been revealed. It includes X Factor 2012 finalist and TV host Rylan Clark-Neal, singer (S Club 8, The Saturdays) and TV host Rochelle Humes and singer, composer, guitarist (McFly) Tom Fletcher.

5 After Midnight, Pixie Lott & Mike Perry.

Eurovision You Decide 2018

Brighton Dome

Brighton Dome.

В него вошли финалист X Factor 2012 и телеведущий Rylan Clark-Neal, певица (S Club 8, The Saturdays) и телеведущая Rochelle Humes и певец, композитор, гитарист (McFly) Tom Fletcher.
