Daz Sampson - Daz Sampson started his music career as a mobile DJ but first found fame as the MC, songwriter and ideas man in Bus Stop. Bus Stop's debut single Kung Fu Fighting featuring Carl Douglas sold 250,000 copies in the UK and was a major international hit. Bus Stop had four hit singles in the UK and released two albums internationally before splitting. Daz formed the duo Rikki & Daz with John Matthews, their single Rhinestone Cowboy (Giddy Up Giddy Up) featured a new vocal from country music legend Glen Campbell and reached number 12 in the UK. Next up was a return to dance music – Daz was playing the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City when he heard Out Of Touch by Hall & Oates on the soundtrack. Within hours, his production partner Paul Keenan had knocked up a demo sampling Out Of Touch, and they formed Uniting Nations. The single sold well over 100,000 singles in the UK, and was a pan-European hit. There followed further Uniting Nations hit singles and an album that showcases Daz's ability to write original smash hooks of his own. Their reputation as one of the UK's leading commercial dance acts was sealed when Smash Hits readers and T4 viewers voted them Best Dance Act at the last ever Pollwinners Party in 2005. But, through it all, Daz yearned to get back to making pop music, and Daz's greatest ambition was to bring home the Eurovision crown to Britain. With that in mind he co-wrote Teenage Life with long-term collaborator John Matthews. Daz says: "This might sound funny to some people but performing on Making Your Mind Up for the chance to represent the UK in Eurovision is in the pinnacle of my ten years in the music industry. "I never get nervous about anything but I'm nervous about this." By the way if you’re wondering about the lyrics, “Mr T” (short for Mr Tommony) was a teacher who told Daz his dream of becoming a pop star wasn’t realistic and “Avy” stands for Avondale High School, his old school in Stockport, where he grew up. - Hello, Daz, first of all our congratulations for you for being selected as Eurovision singer! What was your first reaction to that? - Hi! Well, really I first thought that I 've I lost in the end, that I've been taken over, and then shockingly I've realised that I won the selection. For me it was really dream came true, as I was really big Eurovision song contest fan, I've been watching it every year starting from 80s, and that is the big honour for me to represent my country. I consider winning the national final the highlight of my career. I've already tried to enter Eurovision two years ago, but was not successful. - As fan what were your favourite Eurovision entries from the past? - I can mention Jessica Garlick, Katrina and the Waves, I absolutely loved Johnny Logan. - Does Eurovision have it's place in the British music industry, is it really important event there? - It is really very important, but the problem is that we're having our press very anti-Eurovision, but British people they love Eurovision, and that is most important. - Why then most of the previous British Eurovision representatives were not that sucessful? - This is the reason I've came in this year as I do feel that if something is not done about political voting - in five-six years Eurovision Song Contest will be gone, nobody will need it anymore. I'm going to go to Eastern Europe, to Scandinavia and say them, you know what, let's stop that, let's get back the feeling of the 80s, when the music was decisive factor. Let's stop voting for the neighbouring countries and for politics. I will have this message that I'm going there to save Eurovision. I won't say vote-vote-vote for me, but I will say - make it fair as it was used to be, that every country stand similar chances and the winner is selected only basing on the music qualities. - What do you think will be good placing for your entry in the final? - Obviously, I'd like to win, but there are usually many great songs in there, so I think to enter top 10 will be fairly good result, and good result for Britain. I just want to keep my message and hope the result will be fair. - Have you already heard any other competitors from other countries? - I've already heard only Belgium song, and it is very-very strong entry. - So, you're planning extensive promo-tour? - Yes, I want to visit as many Eurovision countries as I can and because I'm the big fan myself and I want to go there and spread my message. I am not going there to agitate them vote for my song, but to ask them to vote fairly. Eurovision is the biggest music event in the world, and I want it to keep being like this. - You're also coming to Russia? - Yes, I'm planning to come to Moscow with the project Uniting Nations and we will also do some Eurovision campaigning there, I'm looking forward that as I've never been there. - Do you know any Russian or Ukrainian singers? - Sadly no, sorry. - What are other countries you're going to? - Well, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Macedonia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Malta, Greece and all the other places we can, we will try not to miss any opportunity. - Let's speak a bit about your preparations. Everyone wonder, what you will do with the chorus? - It will all be live, performed by 16 year old girls, we're already rehearsing that, we were in studio today trying and I pretty like the outcome we're getting. - The presentation will be similar to that one at National Final? - Yes, presentation will basicly stay the same, but we are planning to add couple surprising tricks. - Have you already set the date for the single release? - Yes, April 17th in the UK. - Are you also preparing an album? - No, not yet, Eurovision is my main priority, and I will do album after Eurovision. I want to show I'm really proud entering to the competition and I want show that I'm working hard to achieve the goals there. 16.02 British broadcaster BBC has announced the list of participants for Making Your Mind Up national final which will take place on 4 March 2006. Here is press-statement: Former member of the UK's most successful boy band of recent years, Blue, and star of the jungle, Antony Costa will be battling it out against another number one-selling artist Kym Marsh, originally from Hear'Say and a successful solo artist in her own right. The all-male soulful vocal harmony group Four Story, with a strong musical pedigree, will be lining up against new-girls on the block and stars of BBC Scotland's River City, City Chix. Joining them on stage is the UK's most unique MC, Daz Sampson, who has racked up a number of pop and dance chart hits under various guises, and Goran Kay, a talented singer-songwriter destined for big things! Making You Mind Up will take place on March 4th, starting 19.20 CET, and will be hosted by the Don of Eurovision, Sir Terry Wogan and Natasha Kaplinsky. They will be joined in the studio by a celebrity panel who will casting their expert eyes over the Euro-hopefuls. However, it's the British public who decides who will be getting on that plane to Athens. Voters from all over the world will be able to cast their vote at BBC site. Lines will be opened from 20.20 CET to 21.00 CET. Two songs participating in the British national preselection were found to be clearly breaking rules of the Eurovision: Song Beautiful Thing was publicly performed by Michelle Lawson (with a bit different lyrics in verses) in September 2004 at ITV televized show and other solo and support paid concerts and was available for commercial digital download and free sample download since July 2004. As also the site of Michelle reports it was issued on a single in August 2004 (even if it was promo - it copies were sent to radiostations), also it was available to listen online at new official site of the singer. Antony Costa has also publicly performed his version of the song before the October 1, 2005 date. Second song under question - remixes for Teenage Life were issued under the name SpaceKats on 8th of March 2004 on official promo release and were available in internet for commercial purchase and free sample download on an open public domain. Sales of the CDs with the song were run on many internet sites, for example here, here, here, here, here, here, here. More than that, official site of the competition Search for a song strangely state: "Sadly, it has been difficult to find just the right sort of artist that could do the justice for the winning song of competition at Making Your Mind Up this year. However, the song will be going through to next year's MYMU." - As all songs of this competition of this year are available to download in the internet and thus can not be available for next year contest. BBC has published official statement on this cases, note that statement contains number of spelling mistakes too: "In response to the queries about Antony Costa and Daz Sampon's (sic) entries to Making your mind up - Antony's song, Beautiful thing, had previously been recorded by Michelle Lawson who shares the same manager (and songwriter) as Antony, John McCloughin. However, the song was never commercially released, and hasn't been available legally on the internet. Daz Sampon (sic) originally recorded Teenage life under the pseudonym Space Cats (sic), again this track wasn't commercially released - the track available on the internet is a white label promo and we are satisfied it does not break EBU Eurovision regulations. The copyright owners of the tracks have been informed and are seeking legal advice on potential copyright infringements. We are satisfied that all six of our entries for Making your mind up 2006 fall within the EBU Eurovision rules regarding performance and commercial release (Section Five, Subsection 2). Once again we thank the loyal UK fanbase and wider Eurovision community for their diligence in this matter" On the opinion of experts of our site, this reply clearly shows difference between professional approach of Cypriot CyBC and Irish RTE broadcasters and amateurish one of British BBC. Previously during this year there were a lot of critics towards CyBC and RTE, which have reacted professionally and have disqualified all songs under question for being available in internet or released on promo CDs before October 1 date. Unfortunately in BBC case we see that the interest of producers and songwriters prevailed as their aim is to get their acts on screens for 3 minutes of success and glory. Last year similar case involved song composed and produced by British team of authors and performed at Russian preselection. Svante Stockselius, Eurovision coordinator, gave this exclusive statement to ESCKaz on the matter: "At the moment it is impossible to give a simple answer on this. We must look into the whole picture and run complete investigation of this certain case. Generally this rule means that a song can not be comercially published on a CD, played in TV/radio or live in front of paying audience. If it remained in the drawer of the composer or publisher and been known only to a limited number of persons it is ok. Published over internet is somewehere in between and we need to run some research on it." Such a reaction also may suggest different approach from EBU towards Great Britain and it's broadcaster BBC, which is part of so called Big-Four. When other countries are acting accordingly to EBU rules even understanding that disqualifications may spoil their image, BBC is clearly ignoring the rules. And it is acting against the future of the contest, as we're sure this can be used as precedent for other selections and other contests as well, and may end up with up to half of the songs performed in national finals being uneligible for Eurovision contest itself as it happened in Ukrainian and Russian national preselections 2005. Более того официальный сайт состязания Search for a song заявляет: "К сожалению, мы не смогли найти подходящего исполнителя для песни победительницы этого состязания, который мог бы представить ее на отборе этого года. Однако, песня примет участие в национальном отборе следующего года." - Что естественно будет невозможно, посколько она уже была размещена в интернете в этом году. Однако телекомпания BBC опубликовала официальное заявление, причем сделано это было через неофициальный голландский фан сайт Евровидения esctoday.com/: "В ответ на запросы об песнях Энтони Косты и Даза Сампона (неправильная транскрипция), принимающих участие в национальном отборе к Евровидению - песня Энтони Beautiful thing была ранее записана Мишель Лоусон, которая работает под началом того же продюсера и автора песни, что и Энтони - Джона МакКлохина. Однако эта песня не была выпущена коммерческим тиражом и не была доступна для легального скачивания в интернете. Даз Сампон записал песню Teenage life под псевдонимом Space Cats (неправильная транскрипция), и снова этот трек не был издан коммерческим тиражем - он доступен в интернете в виде промо и мы уверены в том, что он не нарушает правил Евровидения. По мнению экспертов нашего сайта подобный ответ лишь подчеркивает разницу между профессиональным подходом Киприотского и Ирландского телевещателя и абсолютно любительским подходом Британской телекомпании BBC. Ранее в этом году было много критики в адрес Киприотского и Ирландского телевидения, которое профессионально оценив правила конкурса дисквалифицировали ряд песен за то, что они были доступны в интернете или выпущены на промо дисках до 1го октября прошлого года. К сожалению, ББС демонстрирует что для нее важнее интерес продюсеров и авторов произведений, которые стремятся к получению 3х минут славы и успеха во время демонстрации песни в прайм тайм по основному телеканалу. В прошлом году аналогичный вопрос возникал в отношении песни, написанной и спродюсированной Британской студией звукозаписи и принимавшей участие в Россиийском отборе на Евровидение. В том случае координатор конкурс Сванте Стокселиус дал следующий эксклюзивный комментарий нашему сайту: "Тяжело что-то заметить до подробного изучения каждого конкретного случая. В случае победы этой песни мы будем проводить тщательное всестороннее иследование. В общем данное правило означает запрет выпуска песен на CD, их ротацию на радио или телевидении и выступление на коммерческом концерте. Если песня остается на студии и ее слышало только несколько человек, то к этому у нас нет претензий. А вот публикация в интернете, это нечто среднее и придется взвесить все за и против". Подобная реакция может также означать разный подход ЕВС по отношению к Великобритании, как стране Большой Четверки. В то время, как другие страны, в ущерб собственной репутации, следуют правилам Евровидения - ББС открыто игнорирует эти правила. И это может принести существенный вред конкурсу Евровидение в дальнейшем - если подобный подход послужит прецедентом для других стран в итоге может оказаться, что до половины песен национальных отборов нарушают правила Евровидения - как это было в Украинском и Российском отборах 2005 года.

Antony Costa - Former member of multi-million selling boy-band, Blue, and now a successful solo artist in his own right, Antony Costa has firmly established himself on the musical map. After selling more than 12 million records worldwide with Blue, and a stint in the jungle, Antony has launched his solo career with yet another hit single, Do You Ever Think Of Me. Being no stranger to European chart success, Antony is looking forward to the challenge of riding high in Europe once again! Kym Marsh - At the start of 2001 Kym Marsh was an unknown singer from Wigan. A year on Kym had undergone a meteoric rise to fame with Hear'Say after winning ITV's talent contest Popstars. Hear'Say shot straight to the top of the charts with their first single Pure and Simple, which sold more than 500,000 copies in its first week. A hit album and a sold-out 36 date nationwide tour followed before Kym decided to go it alone. By the end of 2003, Kym had racked up two solo hit singles and an album. In 2004 Kym took to the boards, starring in the West End production of Saturday Night Fever to rave reviews. Displaying further strings to her bow, Kym has since played roles in BBC's Holby City and Doctors, as well a stint as a panellist on ITV's Loose Women. Kym now has her sights firmly set on Europe... Goran Kay - This time last year, Goran Kay's main concern was to pass his end of year exams at university. Twelve months later, he has put his studies on hold to dedicate himself to his musical career. Having grown up in a musical household, Goran's passion for music goes back to a very young age. He learned to play the piano aged seven, started singing at the age of ten and wrote his first song at 13. A few years ago, Goran's introduction to composer/producer Hugo de Chaire gave him his first major commercial break. They have forged a close collaboration and have since written a song for G4's second album. For the first time in his professional career, Goran Kay will be leaving his songwriter's pen at home to grab the microphone in a bid to win the hearts and minds of not only the British public but also the whole of Europe. Four Story - Ben Ofoedu, Rodney Williams, Tony Thompson and Mark Brightman are Four Story - an all male vocal group whose soulful tones, extraordinary vocal range and four part harmonies combine to create a unique style. Ben has been involved in the music industry for a number of years, working under various guises and different genres, most notably as the lead vocalist with Phats and Small in the Nineties. Ben had nurtured the idea of creating a soulful vocal harmony group and suggested the idea to record label boss and manager Steve Long (Mis-teeq). Finding the other members of the group proved an easy and natural process. Ben had been singing with Rodney, Tony and Mark for some years and knew they would compliment Four Story's sound. Four Story spent last year in the studio recording their debut and hope to hit Eurovision highs with their debut single Hand On My Heart. City Chix - Jade Lezar and Laura McMonagle, stars of BBC Scotland's hit soap River City, are City Chix! Jade and Laura first met at the Live and Loud Stage School in Glasgow after Jade won a free place at the school in a local radio station competition. Jade went on to star in the BBC Scotland children's series Stacey Stone. The girls renewed their friendship after meeting up on the set of River City, after Laura secured the role of Zoe, following in the steps of Jade who was already starring in the hit soap as Alana. Both Jade and Laura have been singing at local gigs, including Spirit Aid for the Tsunami appeal. "I Wanna Man", written by Toby Jarvis, has been chosen out of the many entries as the best song of additional selection Search for a song. However, as official site of the competitions strangely state: "Sadly, it has been difficult to find just the right sort of artist that could do the song justice at Making Your Mind Up this year. However, the song will be going through to next year's MYMU." (which is of course totally unpossible as song was available this year). 25.01 Contest among authors wishing to enter British national Eurovision final goes on. As it is known one of the entries of 5 taking part in Making Your Mind Up show, the winner of which will represent the UK in next year's Eurovision, will be selected from open submission. BBC Radio 2 has shortlisted ten songs that will be going through to the judging panel meeting on 26 January 2006. The judging panel will include Mike Batt, Simon Webbe & Hugh Goldsmith.
